Water in the Desert is a recurring, cross-disciplinary conference dedicated to addressing the urgent and complex water challenges of the Chihuahuan Desert and greater West Texas region. Convened by the Borderlands Research Institute in partnership with regional collaborators, the event brings together landowners, scientists, policymakers, conservation leaders, and community members to exchange knowledge, build partnerships, and advance practical, science-based solutions.

Vanessa Puig-Williams of the Environmental Defense Fund moderated a legislative session at Water in the Desert 2026. State Rep. Brooks Landgraf, chair of the House Environmental Regulations Committee, and Rep. Eddie Morales discussed statewide water policy opportunities. The message from the lawmakers was consistent: Innovation must be paired with accountability. (Brenda Ladd Photography)
