Research Scientist
Meadows Research Institute for West Texas Water

Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences
Sul Ross State University

Dr. Kelbi Delaune is a Research Scientist at the Meadows Research Institute for West Texas Water and an Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences at Sul Ross State University. Her work centers on aquatic ecosystems in arid landscapes, with a focus on understanding how desert springs and rivers respond to environmental change.

Delaune’s academic path is interdisciplinary. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre before pursuing a career in the sciences, combining strong communication skills with scientific training. She later earned a Master of Science in Biology from Sam Houston State University and a Ph.D. in Wildlife Science, Aquatic Science, and Wildlands Science and Management from Texas Tech University.

Her research examines how global change drivers—including invasive species, habitat loss, and environmental disturbance—affect aquatic communities in desert environments. By studying these systems at multiple scales, Delaune’s work contributes to a deeper understanding of ecosystem resilience and informs conservation and management strategies in water-limited regions.

In addition to her research, Delaune has a strong interest in mentorship and experiential learning. At the Meadows Research Institute for West Texas Water, she contributes to education and outreach efforts that connect scientific research with students and community audiences, helping translate complex ecological concepts into accessible, place-based learning opportunities.

Through her interdisciplinary background and commitment to hands-on education, Delaune supports the Institute’s broader goal of strengthening understanding of desert water systems and preparing future water professionals.
